3 October 1903 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 3rd October [1903]. Went out at 10 with Pss Charlotte in gondola to see the apartment wh proves to be too small so we did not stay out long– Pss Charlotte had to pack & we lunched before one as she was leaving Venice by the 2.10 train for Germany. Connie went on to the station with her suite & I remained to bring Pss Charlotte in my gondola. Before we went down the stairs she said she wanted to bid me her real good bye here—& she kissed me & clung round my neck & caught her breath with dry sobs & quite upset me. Poor little thing she has something on her mind & also feels the loss of her mother & tells me she feels as if I were another mother to her & she begged me to stick to her– As we went away from the house, I said she was to remember that I would always go to her if she wanted me– She said “Will you come if I am ever ill”– I promised this & told her that she knew where my house was & she cd come to it at any moment. At the station were the Belmondos, Malagolas & Prefect to see her off & she looked sad as the train bore her away. Poor things these Princesses have a sad life never sure of their friends not being able to judge the world as it really is. On my return home had a meeting of the Committee for the Lavori Feminine with Css Maria Pasolini who is staying for a few days in Venice & Mme Malagola. I accepted to be a V. President– We are also to begin to found a Library for reference.
