2 October 1903 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 2nd [October 1903]. While we were at breakfast came a note from Signor Malagola to say that the “Amphitrite” was just coming in to Venice so we ordered our gondola & rushed off as soon as it was ready & arrived opposite S. Marks just as the yacht was anchoring. Pss Charlotte at first not being recognised was denied to go on board, but at last an officer was fetched & let her in. I accompanied her while Connie waited in the gondola. Pss Sophie received her sister with a scream of surprise & delight. The Prince came out to see & they were all delighted to meet. I settled to leave Pss Charlotte there & went off with Connie to the Piazza & we walked home leaving the gondola to the Princesses. They came at 1 to lunch with me & then directly after lunch we accompanied the Greek princes to the station. They are on their way to Darmstadt to attend the wedding P. Nicholas of Greece. Pss Sophie looks ill & thin & pale—but is very attractive with her pretty gentle manner. The Prince is a fine looking man with an honest face & looks one straight in the face. He speaks all languages equally well. We all spoke English. At 4 o’cl Pss Charlotte went to pay Marchesa Cassis a visit at the Prefettura. She is just on her sofa but could not get up. She & the Pss were delighted with each other. Connie & I accompanied her. From there we went to the V. Murano shop where the Pss made purchases. She is quite set upon having an apartment in Venice & in going down the Grand Canal we saw a bill “to let” in the window of the little Pal. Folier & made enquiries about it—then we went for a row together. Connie had gone out with Malagola & we were alone & very happy. Had a nice chat.
