17 October 1903 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 17th [October 1903]. I got a letter which gave me a shock from a servant with grave accusations abt Nellie & Capt. Wyld. I do not believe them & think it a case of black mail—so I wrote off to Duncannon for advice. Still it is a worry– Verona went with me to Cav. Arbib’s house where he showed us his wonderful collection of samples of old beads. We stayed a couple of hours during wh time he passed his treasures before our eyes. They were most interesting and it is good to see a Venetian (tho’ of Eastern origin) taking such interest in things connected with old Venetian commerce. He had also collected old carvings &c & has a charming garden & house in which takes pride & interest. It was 1 o’cl before we left his little museum & had to run off to our luncheon. In the eveng abt 6 Sister Clare came to see me to talk of hospital matters. A sudden storm came up—wind & thunder. I sent a gondolier with her on foot to the Zattere where she could take the steamer to go across the Giudecca as no gondola could go out.
