22 October 1903 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 22nd [October 1903]. I sent for Marzollo & gave him the telegram. He went off with it to Sr Arbib & returned saying he would not give more than £80 which was his first offer. I am disappointed but as I do not understand business have nothing to say. Violet & I did bead work together with little success. At 3 she & I went out in gondola to call for Lady Radnor & took her & her friend Mr Squire to see our hospital. Sister Clare has a patient who needs ice & eggs to have a refrigerator– I went to call on Miss Holland while Violet went to the Eden’s garden. Miss Holland has the house & garden next the hospital which indeed is also her property. It was once a casino of the Martinengo family & she has fitted it up very much & made the garden very pretty. She happened to mention that she has a cottage next the hospital to let & I at once asked to take it to be able to add it to the hospital. She said she would think of it. I went from her to fetch Violet at the Edens & had tea with them & Mrs Hopkinson & her dear little boy of 4—a lovely child—nicely brought up– It began to rain so as we were in open gondola we had to run home. Later tho’ still raining Violet & I put on short skirts & ran out to see if we could buy a refrigerator. We found one & ordered it to be sent tomorrow morning & Violet gave the money to pay for it. Mr Woods dined with us & took the girls to the theatre to see Zago act in Goldoni’s play “Il Ventaglio.” I went early to bed.
