21 December 1903 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 21st [December 1903]. Prof. F. Trombini & his old sister came to lunch with us. At 3 the Prinsep family came to go with us to see the Magazine for beads belonging to the great bead company at the head of wh are Mr Arbib and Cav. Barbon the Sindaco of Murano. It is in an old Palace at the Madonna del Orto. There Arbib met us—& I also made acquaintance with Cav. Barbon who has a charmingly good face. The establishment is wonderful– Millions of beads are piled up in large stores sorted in all colours & sizes. Each country has its especial store room—from wh the beads are sent straight to their destination– Many men & women have regular employment there & many others work in their own homes for the Establishment. It was all very interesting & often very picturesque. Before this Co. was formed beads were made in smaller quantities by small societies who all vied with each other & so ruined each other. Nearly all the beads in the world are made in this place. Those in Bohemia being the only ones to compete with them.
