25 December 1903 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 25th [December 1903]. Christmas Day. Mr Montalba had found an American clergyman & got him to remain till 2 today & perform the service for us wh he did very well & there was a pretty large congregation. Mr Harston is reported to be better. The day was cold damp & rather windy. After lunch I went over to the Cos. Hos. in gondola—to see Sister Clare & asked her to come & sleep at Ca’ Capello as it was so far for her to return in this bad weather after dining with us. When I got home found Mr Prinsep & Thoby who had come to make arrangements & notes for this evening’s tableaux vivants– We dined at 7.30 & the guests were the Prefect & Marchesa Cassis, M. & Mme Wiel, Count & Css H. Lutzow, Mr & Mrs Prinsep & Thoby, Anthony & Nicky Prinsep, Mr Auguste Montalba & Clara & Hilda M., Miss Eaton (Sister Clare), Mr Williamson, & Ct & Css Belmondo. It was a merry Party—we eat according to the proper tradition Roast beef—plum pudding & mince pies—drank each other’s healths & wished each other many merry Christmases. After dinner other people joined us—about 50 & we had portrait tableaux under the direction of Mr Prinsep very few had been prepared before hand—& I dashed on different people in the audience & got them to pose arranging them with a chiffon—a velvet—a piece of lace– The effect was excellent. Tea & refreshments were served abt 12 & the entertainment was over.
