26 March 1904 — 3 Savile Row
Saturday. 26th March [1904]. Eda Alderson & I left London at 2.20 P.M. to go to Venice. I took with me Miss Kate Burrows who had accepted the post of matron-nurse to the Cosmopolitan hospital at Venice & who is to take the place of Miss Eaton (Sister Clare). I had also my maid Baker & the man Alessandro– We had a perfect passage—places in the sleeping car & a comfortable journey to Milan where we arrived at 3.20 on Sunday. It was very fine as we passed over the St Gothard—but the snow was lying quite deep. When we got to Milan it was raining hard, we therefore did not move out of the station—till we set off again by the 6.10 train for Venice getting there at 11.35. We were met at the station by Sr Malagola & before I got into the gondola he managed to tell me half the gossip of the town. How Countess Albrizzi had got up a “Café chantant” in her house as an amusement—& intended to have a public representation at a theatre & the Socialists of Venice threatened to prevent it by hissing if she attempted it &c &c &c.
