12 April 1904 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 12th [April 1904]. The Prince went off to Ravenna with Signor Malagola & they will be absent the rest of this week as they are to make a tour to Ferrera, San Marino, Rimini &c. As Prof. Malagola comes from that part of the world he will make an excellent guide. I took Pss Charlotte out in the morning & young Malagola met us to take us round the antiquity shops in search of old stuffs wh the Pss was anxious to find. We were not successful so we left Malagola in the Piazza & went on to Sr Desideri’s house where we found some cut glass chandeliers wh the Pss bought– After lunch we all went out again to the Venezia-Murano glass shop &c. Just as I was nearly dressed for dinner, Alessandro the servant rushed up in great agitation to say that “Signori” had arrived to stay. I flew downstairs & found the D. & Dss of Somerset whom I had expected tomorrow evening. They had telegraphed to announce their arrival but had made a mistake in addressing the telegram so that he was sent here to them. I only readdressed the telegram & sent it to them at Milan without opening it. Their rooms were not ready—& there was some confusion as I had to move Mrs Burdon Muller & her boy into one room in order to fit them all in. However they were given a place to dress in and by bed time my servants had settled them all in comfortably. Just as they arrived (with their secy Capt. Beaumont) Baroness Reinelt arrived to dine with us & Mr Val Prinsep. With only 1½ hour’s difference of time we were all at dinner & enjoyed the excitement vastly. Eda slept in my bed that night so we had to put up an extra bed & it was too late to do so this evening. This being my usual Tuesday evening’s reception a large party came eager to see the Princess & to be presented to her. Css Anina Morosini came but altho’ the Princess shook hands with her she did not take much notice of her. She says she is provoked with her for her stupid way of going on with the Emperor of Germany her brother & does not care to encourage her—she declares that the Css is “Prinzentoll”. The party was brilliant & all went off well.
