18 April 1904 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 18th [April 1904]. Today the Prince & Princess went in the afternoon to the D. della Grazia’s (Palazzo Vendramin) to hear a Viennese Band play Wagner’s funeral march under the windows of the room in which he died. All Venice was there– Great was the disappointment that the weather changed & it came on to rain & to blow. The music could not take place out of doors—but the band had to be in the long entrance hall of the palace. The P. & Pss had chairs placed for them on the Grand staircase & there we all congregated. Only the March was played which was fine & solemn & the musicians disappeared. They had come to Venice to perform at a Concert of the Benedetto Marcello tomorrow in the Fenice theatre. We returned to the 1st floor & partook of refreshments & then returned home.
