24 May 1904 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 24th [May 1904]. At 8.30 Mr Horatio Brown came to me to deliver over to me the papers & accounts of the Cosmopolitan Hospital of which he has hitherto been treasurer– I have consented to take that office & I am sure I should make a great mess of it were it not that good Mr Montalba has promised to help me to keep the accounts. After breakfast Mr Harston came to talk over the affairs of the Sailor’s Institute. Then at 11 came Sr Marzollo & brought Sr Zanetti of Murano glass works, to talk over Venezia-Murano affairs. He is highly jealous of Sr Arbib, abused him & his methods & wants to be sole manager. I told him he must write what he wanted the directors in London to know & I would forward his letter, wh I did. A short time after he left Cavalier S. Arbib came himself on the same business but with diametrically opposite opinions– He read me a kind of ultimatum he has written to the London directors demanded that the affairs should be settled by next Saturday. By the time he left it was nearly 1—& I was rather exhausted. Sir Edward Poynter had been unwell in the night and did not put in an appearance till tea time. Mrs Silver left for England by 2 P.M. train & I accompanied her to the station & saw her off. Lady Radnor & her niece went by the same train. It was very hot. The summer heat has set in very early. After tea I took the 3 Poynters to the Edens garden– Received as usual in the evening. Mr Algy Bourke brought the Prince Louis of Teck & a Mr Milnes. The Prince looked round at all the pictures and seemed to understand about them. He stood talking to me but would not mix with the rest of the company wh was not very polite. He evidently came to see the house! He is tall & very good looking & wonderfully like his father. He left before the was served. He spoke of Baron & Bss Meyer who have lately come to establish themselves here. I asked him who they were. He said the Bss is a daughter of a Dss Caracciolo—married & was divorced by Prince Brancaccio—& then married Baron Meyer son of a rich Dresden banker. He said they are great friends of Pss E. Polignac & would probably have Lady de Grey much to stay with them. This shows their “set.” The Prince said he was going away on a trip to Brescia &c & hoped to see me on his return. I doubt that I shall see him. He will probably find the Meyer set more amusing.
