25 May 1904 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 25th [May 1904]. Sir Edward & Hugh Poynter left for Florence after lunch & so now Mrs Poynter & I are left alone. I went at 3 to call on Bss Reinelt & found her very low in her mind at the attempt at Blackmail wh are made upon her from Trieste. She said she seriously thought of going away from here to live at Vienna & asked my advice. I told her I should do whatever I liked & not give the scoundrels the joy of seeing I was intimidated. She cheered up & said she wished to stay here was now confirmed in her intention to remain. Poor old thing she is dreadfully worried. On leaving her I returned home to fetch Mrs Poynter & took her to Hotel d’Europe to take 5 o’cl tea with Lady Lindsay. While there Signora Malagola came from Monsignor Bonomelli’s conference at the Patriarchs on the care of Italian emigrants. It seems that Bonomelli praised the Christian work of the German Protestant clergy who helped people of all religions alike. When he had done speaking the Patriarch who has been newly appointed rose & after thanking Bonomelli said with great violence that no Christian aid was very good but that wh came through Catholic priests. Bonomelli took the rebuke humbly & silently. All sensible people are indignant with the Patriarch. After dinner we had a visit from Lady Normanton & her granddaughter Lady Edith Villiers—a nice looking fair girl.
