28 May 1904 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 28th [May 1904]. I resolved to stay in bed all the morng & get a good rest—but at 11 came a note from Bss Beinelt asking me to go to see her. So I dressed & went there. She is still nervous. She said she had a great favour to ask me. She has settled to go to the Exhibition of St Louis in August—all the ladies here at once have offered to accompany her. She does not want them & if only she says “quo pentêtre” she is going with me—the ladies will be afraid & will not dare to ask to go. Of course I consented to be the imaginary compagnon de voyage. Came home to lunch. A great storm threatened & it became very dark. But the rain did not come down so Mrs P. & I went to tea with the Montalbas. Met there Princess de Polignac who was very pleasant & friendly & looks simple & dignified. In the evening the weather quite cleared so that we were able to take a moonlight row.
