1 June 1904 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 1st June [1904]. We had a committee meeting for the Sailor’s Institute at 10.30. Mr Woods R.A. presiding. Mr Harston surprised all by resigning his temporary Treasurership wh Mr de Zuccato undertook. I had a little talk with Mr Montalba who is troubled at the state of things as regards the church & the chaplain– He however, is ready to do anything to be conciliatory that he can– I went at 5 to fetch Bss Reinelt & take her out in gondola. I took her to the Eden’s garden to see the Madonna lilies wh are now in full bloom & in the height of their glory. She was delighted. I had a word with Mr Eden; he thinks Mr Harston means to go & turned out to be right. Mr Woods came to dine with me at 7.30 & Sister Katherine came also to have her monthly account paid. I settled it with her after dinner & then we walked to the Sailor’s Inst: to be present at the men’s concert. There was not much “talent”—except that the chairman a 1st engineer had a splendid voice & well trained & he sang several times as did also Miss Eaton (Sister Clare) who was present. Before the end of the eveng Mr Harston who sat next me brought out a letter he had written to Mr Eden to say he preferred to leave Venice & asked me to read it. He said he knew he was doing right & one day I would acknowledge it. What could I say? nothing. I could only accept it. A thunderstorm was grumbling round the whole eveng but it passed away without rain & we walked home a little after 10–
