3 June 1904 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 3rd [June 1904]. I opened my typewriter & began to type out Henry’s journal for a trip he made abroad in 1838 with Brockenden. It is good to have started a piece of work. I then had an hour’s work at the little figure I began to model in wax the year before last. Had an interview with my “engineer” about work to be done in the house. Mr Eden sent me his correspondence with Mr Harston to read & to send on to Mr Montalba. The Dss della Grazia & Miss Milman came to tea—after wh I went out in gondola to the Piazza & happened to find the Prefect & his wife & children landing just at the same moment so I walked abt with them. We went to a gentleman’s called Gasparetti’s house, where we were told there were beautiful old things on sale. We found a mess of indifferent Empire silver not worth looking at. Happily the owner was away so we escaped easily. We thence returned to the Piazza & sat at Quadri’s café & had ices & talked to the Cassis babies who were also there. After leaving the Cassis I met Mme Aspasie Kwekwitsch & she walked with me & I took her to her home in the gondola. After dinner I had a visit from Prof. Malagola & took him out for a row on the lagunes. There had been a storm somewhere near & it was delightfully cool & refreshing. I am reading over some old packets of letters from Mrs Higford Burr to me. She used to write all the news & gossip she could collect for us from the time of our marriage when we were abroad. It is a melancholy pleasure as it recalls old memories—& I see more & more what a happy life I led & have to be thankful for– Mr H. Burr also wrote very ably and tells of many interesting people whom we knew.
