4 June 1904 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 4th June [1904]. Typed & modelled & arranged a cabinet of old letters. Melancholy work—so many letters to arrange in drawers—which will never be added to, the writers having passed away! Lord & Lady Dillon came to tea at 4—very nice people caring for pictures & nice things– They say that they have a collection in England which they invited me to go & see. At 5 I went in gondola to call on Mr & Mrs Johnson Humphrey who live at the Madonna del Orto, Pal: Minelli. They received me in their garden. They have lately bought the 2 palaces next them the Gasparo Contarini Palaces in order to enjoy their gardens. They are charming old world Italian gardens with hornbeam hedges & very shady. At the back of them is a lovely house on the edge of the Lagoon called Casa dei Spirite—that they also have bought so they now have a good large property there. After dinner I went out in gondola & called on the Canevaros but they were away dining on the Lido—so I floated about to listen to the band on the Piazzetta. The Canevaros passed me in their gondola & I stopped them & we had a little chat. They asked me to dine with them tomorrow to meet Nigra the ex Ambassador who now lives here. I said I found I could not as I was going to the sailor’s Inst: but agreed to go to them in the evening. There was a nice cool breeze on the Canal–
