10 June 1904 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 10th [June 1904]. Painted– Cooler weather & a storm in the afternoon. The Venice paper announces that the Prefect Cassis is leaving Venice & has been made Consigliere di Stato. I knew he wd be glad as he was chafing to get away. I am very sorry. I shall miss him & his wife Elsie who is good & pretty. After 5 it cleared & I went to see them, to congratulate them, & to say how sorry I am. I also went to see Bss Reinelt at Hotel Victoria & found many people with her. After dinner I went for a giro in gondola. We took up all the carpets here yesterday & today to make the house cooler. There was a great fire near St Lorenzo yesterday a furniture store quite destroyed. The Carpaccios in St Giorgio degli Schiavoni were in danger & had to be carried away—also 80 old alms house men who live nearby. Today there was a fire in a stable of cows on the Giudecca but only hay was lost.
