9 June 1904 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 9th [June 1904]. Hotter than ever—that is more oppressive. I was not able to do anything but paint. At 4 the storm got nearer & finally broke bringing great relief. There was a great fire towards S. Lorenzo a furniture depot was destroyed—& the Church of St Giorgio degli Schiavoni & the Carpaccios were in great danger. The fire began abt 3 but the Pompieri only passed my house after 4. It appears the Admiral at the Arsenal refused to send his machines until he had been formally invited to do so by the Municipio as once before at a fire he had come to loggerheads with that body. The storm being over I went out in gondola. Called at the hospital—matron out– Called on Mrs Kidder an American lady who was daughter of                the American Minister at Constantinople when we were there & who married from there. I found her in & asked her to come to see me after dinner wh she did bringing 2 other ladies with her. I went to the Piazza & saw there Elsie Cassis & her children walking. When Mrs Kidder had seen the pictures in the eveng & had left I went for a row. Seeing lights in the Curtis’ windows I paid them a visit & found with them staying Lady Kenmare. After a chat for ½ hour I went for a short row & then home to bed. It was a good deal cooler after the storm.
