8 June 1904 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 8th [June 1904]. A terribly hot heavy day of scirocco. I did little else but copy my water colour. A storm threatened but never came. At 6 Bss Reinelt called for me to take me to dine with her at the Lido. We went by the steamer which starts from St Angelo just opposite this house. It is the first time I ever went by a canal steamer & I rather hated it—it is a silly prejudice. However we went straight on it to the Lido. Then we took the tram to the bathing establishment—& went on to the terrace. Admiral Canevaro was there waiting for us & had arranged all the dinner, table, menu &c for the Bss. Very soon we were joined by the Dss Canevaro & her sister Maria Cozzi, General & Countess Rassini née Gritti & Av: Valsecchi. We had a good & copious dinner & were very lively– It got dark before we were half thro’ the meal & the electric light was lighted. It was very dark & there was distant lightening. There were very few people about the weather being bad– There are now big hotels where formerly one saw cottages—there are villas in the place of gardens—in fact the whole place is woefully vulgarized since the days I first came here—& Byron would not recognise his favorite ride! When I used to go there to bathe in 1875 the trees which form the avenue from the steamer landing place to the bathing place were just planted & gave little shade– They are now big trees. The Italians admire the Lido now as much as I detest it! The Bss’s gondola met us at the Ponte della Paglia as after 8 the steamers do not run on the canal. We got home abt 10 & I went to bed. The heat stifling.
