16 June 1904 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 16th [June 1904]. Lady Lindsay came to lunch with me & to bid farewell as she leaves Venice tomorrow. Guggenheim called at 3– Went at 3.15 in gondola to fetch Baroness Reinelt at the Hotel Victoria. We took the steamer & went to the Lido in order to pay our respects to the ArchDss Isabelle. Happily we did not find her at her cabanne—so after a good deal of fussing about—we wrote our names on a sheet of paper & this we left at her cabanne & then went & sat on the terrace over the water & took our coffee & watched the world in the sea & out of it—& a very shabby world it seemed to be– Marchese Sonimi Picenardi was there & came & sat at our table for some time. I was glad when we got away from the Lido. We were bound for the Public Gardens where we sat & talked & had lemonade. There was no one there & it was cool & pleasant. The Bss opened out about the conduct of the Css Morosini & is certain that she has taken up with the Kaiser who, she says, is bewitched by her. After dinner I went out for a row. Called at the Harstons & found Mrs H. is ill from gastritis—that the paper for the Prefect has to be signed & has not been sent in so I went off to the Hospital & saw Sister Katherine about it. On our way home from the Giardini the Bss & I called on a Bss Ruhter at Hotel Britannia an old lady who lives at Gorizia & is the great person of the place. She is old but clean looking & very spick & span. My little green parrot Zala flew out of an open window today & disappeared!
