23 June 1904 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 23rd [June 1904]. We breakfasted in our own rooms but at 10 I went to the Dss of Abercorn & proposed to take her out to have her first view of the Piazza & St Marks. We ferried across the Canal & then went on foot to the Square & into the church & then through the Castile of the Palazzo Ducale to have a view of the Baceno with St Giorgio & the Salute &c. The Dss was highly delighted & it is always a pleasure to see the astonishment & delight of a person of education at their first sight of the glories of Venice. As it was excessively hot we hastened home by soon after 11. We lunched at one & then sat talking & working till 4 when we had tea & then we went out in gondola to pay the Edens a visit in their garden, coming home just in time for dinner. At 9 we went for a float on the canal & for the Dss to hear the singers in boats who perform opposite to the hotels– The delight the ears of the ordinary tourist—but as they mostly sing very badly and the 3 boats are within earshot of each other one quickly get to be disgusted with them.
