22 June 1904 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 22nd [June 1904]. In the afternoon Countess Mary Clary the daughter of the P. & Pss who live here came to see me & we had a long talk. She is an only daughter—evidently of a curiously shy & taciturn disposition. I tried to draw her out—found her decidedly interesting & intelligent. She evidently does not fit in with her surroundings. I kept her to tea and then took her back in gondola to her own home—begging to come again another day. Then I went to the Hotel Victoria & picked up Baroness Reinelt. We rowed to the Public Gardens & got out & sat there till 7 when I took her back to the hotel & went home to dine. I was aghast at the meanness of people here towards the Bss. How they accept money of her for their private use—& even after that treat her unkindly. Really the poor woman is very much to be pitied for her riches—& is a prey to all kind of heartless greedy people. I advised her to go to Vienna or Rome for the winters. After dinner I took a row to the Hospital to see Sister Katherine. She said the patient was very delirious still & she had this morning had a great struggle to keep him from going out of the window again. I got home at 11 & undressed & then waited to receive the Dss of Abercorn who arrived at 11.30 from London to stay with me– When she arrived we at once went to bed.
