18 July 1904 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 18th [July 1904]. Had a headache & had to lie in the dark all day in the dressing room now made into a sitting room. Mr Curtis called in the morning & persuaded me to go out for a row with him but it was hotter out of doors than in & I was glad to get back. Later on Cav: Salvadore Arbib came to see me to say that he starts tonight for London to sign the arrangements made as to his joining the V. Murano Co. I had also a letter from Duncannon to say it is all arranged & all danger of its now falling into the hands of Jesurum & Co is averted. I am glad & hope for future success– Then came Mr Montalba & brought me the Church accts of the past 3 years to see. He is very sore at having them taken from him & given over to Mr Harston & this is a fresh worry to me. As soon as one thing is settled another crops up & falls on me—but by patience & time I hope all may smooth itself out. It is a bother to have all this just as one has a bad headache & feels extra lonely. Css Rossini came to call wh diverted my thoughts a bit. In the evening there was a grand serenade on the Canal to finish up the Redentore fête– Mr & Mrs H. Johnston, Mme Kwekwitsch & Malagola & Genl de Horsey came to see it from my windows. There were crowds of gondolas. The galleggiante stopped opposite this house & there was a song by a tenor well sung & encored. When it had passed we took to our gondolas—Mlle K. & Malagola in mine & I with the General & we followed the fête to the end opposite to Danielli’s hotel & then home by abt 12.30. The day had been very hot—but there was a cooler air at night.
