3 August 1904 — Belluno
Wednesday. 3rd August [1904]. Mr Kennedy left for Venice by the very early train so I said good bye to him over night. He has gone to stay 2 days at Cà Capello on his way back to his post at Montenegro which he hates having been there 8 years or more. As soon as I had packed & paid my bill I walked on to Salce leaving Baker to bring the luggage in a carriage. It was an exceedingly hot day but I had a lovely walk & got to the Villa Eden about 11.30 just as they were going to breakfast, glad to find myself with such good friends & to be out of an hotel & into a private home again. We took a drive after 4 oclock tea & dined at 7.30– Sat out in the garden afterwards and retired to bed at 9.30– I played patience & read as I am not used to go so early to sleep. They breakfasted at 7.30. I had my tea brought to me at 7—& then proceeded to study Dante & write letters. Carry Eden generally gardened in the morning & then we sat reading & working after lunch. Mr Eden spent the early morning lying on the chaise longue in the gazebo with his 5 dachshunds on his knees. After lunch he retired to his siesta—Carry & I sat in the great hall. I read aloud to her Tallentyre’s Life of Voltaire wh was most interesting, while she worked. The post generally came in abt 2 o’cl when we were eager for news of the Russo-Japanese war & pleased to see that the plucky little Japs were going from victory to victory.
