12 August 1904 — Salce, Belluno
Friday. 12th [August 1904]. We went over in the afternoon to Socchieva to have tea with Mr & Mme Wiel (she née Lawley) where they have a villa of the last century with a garden of high hornbeam hedges cut in formal fashion & said to have been planned by some French emigré after the Revolution, in imitation of such gardens as those at Versailles. The Canevaros & Mr Montalba met us there.
