15 October 1904 — Cettinje
Saturday. 15th [October 1904]. Woke to a pouring wet day with nothing to be seen from the windows. Mr Kennedy came abt 11 when it held up a little & took me to write my names in the books of the Crown Princess & Princess Mirko & the reigning Princess. We met en route the Minister for Foreign Affairs & he was presented to me & we paid a visit to the Turkish Ambassador that I might thank him for the loan of his carriage yesterday. He was at home & delighted to receive me & had Turkish coffee served. From here we returned to the hotel where I found Mr Montalba & we lunched together. Abt 4 Mr Kennedy fetched me again, tho’ it still drizzled & took me to call on the wife of the Minister for F.A. a Montenegrin lady in the costume of the country who had been brought up in the Russian school & spoke French very tolerably. She wore a black skirt a white shirt over wh was an embroidered zouave & a long blue over coat. We walked on to the Austrian Legation to call on Mme Kuhn who lives in one of the best houses here built by the Austrian Govt. She was playing the piano well—& dressed very fashionably & not very suitably to the place. She received us kindly, rattled on incessantly & presented us to her mother Countess Radai. We went from the drawing room to Herr Baron Kuhn’s study & had 5 o’cl tea & saw their two nice boys of 8 & 10 years old. On leaving the Legation we went to the Russian school & I made acquaintance with the Russian directress                who was glad to tell us of her work & show some new dormitories that have just been added. There were over 80 beds in double rooms only divided by a small seat. The head of the 2nd row at the foot of the 1st. All was very clean & neat but it at once struck me that the room was too low & badly ventilated the windows being all kept shut at night. This school is maintained by Russia & is the only means of education above the common day schools of the country. I promised to return tomorrow to see more as it was too late now—went on back to the hotel dined & sat talking to Mr Montalba till bed time. Mr Kennedy took Mr Montalba to call on the Turkish Minister before dinner he having invited us to dinner tomorrow.
