Tuesday. 30th [May 1905]. The papers bring news of a terrible naval battle in the Far East in wh the Japanese have beat the Russia combined 3 fleets– Awful descriptions of wholesale loss of life—how the Russians throw overboard their wounded—in order to make room for fighting– It is thought that 7000 Russians are dead or prisoners and the number of ships lost 22– The Japanese are said to have lost one big ship & a few small ones– The whole thing is appalling & the battle the largest naval one since Trafalgar just a century ago. | |
