22 August 1905 — Canford Manor, nr. Wimborne, Dorset
Tuesday. 22nd [August 1905]. Went with Cornelia in motor over to Lychett to a garden party given by Sir Elliot & Lady Tees. They had rebuilt a small house in the Jacobean style—have turned the high road to some distance from the house, added to the Park & made “a place” of it. They have got Leighton’s last picture—one by John Collyer—a nude woman with her back turned & leaning on a panther—a Dixie—besides a view of Mazarbo in Burano by Stansfield—an oil painting—a fine thing & well composed tho’ not like the reality. Sir Elliot took us to his study to show us a frieze reproduced from the Elgin marbles of wh he is very proud– Tho’ the room was too small it did not appear so odd as one might have supposed. The views from the house are fine—the sea & Purbeck. Of course I knew no one at the party except the Chelmsfords & a Lady Seymour (widow of Albertazzi) who came up to speak to me– Chelmsfords & Corise’s party dined at Canford.
