22 October 1905 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 22nd [October 1905]. I went to morning service & went out in the afternoon to see the Genl de Horsey & found him pretty well & not going to Hyères before the end of the month. I came home to tea to which came Ola & also Clara Montalba. I went to the service at the sailor’s Inst: at 7. Walked there with Baker & on the return was accompanied by Mr Harston & Dr van Someren. The latter addressed the congregation wh bored me much but my indignation was great when I found that on the way home he was distributing tracts to the people he passed. I am very careful to abstain from the least interference in religion & propaganda—so that to have subjected me to the annoyance of appearing to be mixed up with his mad religious schemes is unpardonable! I tried to walk as fast as to shake him off but was not successful—& we parted coldly in Campo San Polo.
