1 January 1906 — Panipat
Monday. 1st January [1906]. Nela & I sat out in the morning in the compound in the shade of some of the fine trees—& also took a little walk with the small Howell boy– After lunch we drove to the station with the Howells & took 5 o’cl train back to Delhi. We looked out for the minars built along the old road to Delhi by the Great Akbar & saw a good many some in a good state of preservation. It was dark before we arrived & we saw many fires of watchers of their flocks—in one place camels all seated of a circle round their drivers who had their fire alight. We reached the Hotel Cecil about 7.30 & in time to dine.
