19 January 1906 — Benares
Friday. 19th January [1906]. The Baboo had promised to take us to visit the Fort this morning & we were ready for him at 8 but he did not appear. Thinking we had misunderstood him & were to meet him at the river we drove to the river landing place but not finding him we returned to the Hotel & left for the station at 12 to make our journey to Calcutta by the 1 P.M. train. A reserved carriage was ready there for us, Nela, Miss Waldegrave, Baker & I. The good old Munshi came to the station to see us off & sat sometime chatting at last we found that the station master was going to attach our carriage to a 2 train—not the 1st we had thought of so we begged the Munshi not to wait & he took leave of us. On leaving the Hotel (Clarkes) we found that we were not allowed to pay our bills—the Munshi having said we were his guests. Our confusion was great but there was nothing for it. The hotel keeper would not listen to us. At Moghul Serai, the great junction our carriage was attached to the Punjaub train. At the 1st station out of Benares our friend the Baboo appeared to take leave of us—very surpressé & civil & we parted great friends.
