20 January 1906 — Calcutta
Saturday. 20th [January 1906]. We had a very comfortable journey getting to Howrah station at 8 a.m. Here we parted with Miss Waldegrave who went to the Grand Hotel & we went to stay with Mr Justice & Mrs Harington at 7 Middleton St. Our hosts were not up but we found a letter of welcome & 2 very pleasant rooms prepared on ground floor leading out of the dining room & a verandah on the garden. There being no room for Baker I had her in my room. It appeared after that the maids were usually put into tents in the garden—& Miss Postal’s (who is staying here) maid was sleeping in a tent when abt a week ago she was attacked by a native & much frightened– The Judge appeared at 9 & we breakfasted– The 2 ladies had been out at a ball last night & were not visible till later– The Harington’s is a kind of bungalow—most comfortable & very well furnished. Miss Cornelia Sarabji came to lunch much to our delight looking as charming as ever with her graceful Parsee costume of a yellow saree. She accompanied us out shopping in the afternoon & then took us to tea with her in her flat not far from the Haringtons. After this we walked back. The Haringtons dined out & Nela & I alone & went early to bed. It is hot here & muggy.
