24 January 1906 — Calcutta
Wednesday. 24th [January 1906]. Went again to Cooks on the momentous tour subject. I went to lunch with the Quadts & made the acquaintance of the Count himself. Met there our old acquaintance the German Baroness who since we had seen her has been up to Darjeeling & was more excited & talkative than ever. From here I called for Nela & we fetched Miss Waldegrave & drove out to Tolly Gunge where there is a Club House in a lovely garden in the suburbs of Calcutta. We had to drive along the native quarters where we saw the life of the natives—& all their bazaars– It was an interesting sight—but we had no time to stay to see the gardens as Miss W. had an engagement & we had to hurry back. In the evening we all went to a state ball given by the Lieut Govr & Lady Fraser to meet Their Excellencies. The house is large & the ball room very long with a dais at one end for the Viceregal party. All Calcutta was invited & there were all sorts of people there. I had no speech with the Mintos. It seems to be the fashion for people of all ages to “sit out” a dance. I was vastly amused at being invited to “sit out” 3 times with old gentleman. It is not a bad plan after all as it secures a few moments for conversation comfortably seated. When I was young only young people sat out to flirt. I was taken in to the State supper by Sir Patrick Playfair a rich merchant. The food was extra bad & there was a lack of waiters. Nela & I were brought home after supper by the Judge who was glad, as we were, to return early.
