28 January 1906 — Calcutta
Sunday. 28th [January 1906]. Accompanied Mrs Harington to morning service in the Cathedral. In afternoon we drove in her carriage to the Botanical Gardens to see the famous Banyan tree. We walked from the entrance gates down Palmyra Avenue a stately avenue of palms– The trees & lawns are lovely & it was a lovely evening. The great banyan tree did not seem to me as beautiful as the one of Barrackpore tho’ it probably is larger. The sun was beginning to set as we walked back to the carriage & it was nearly dark before we reached home. When we got to the Howrah boat bridge we found that it was closed for river traffic. Luckily we had not long to wait before it was opened. There was a tremendous string of vehicles waiting to pass over– When we got to Middleton Street we found Corise just arrived having returned from Burmah. She is as cheery as ever—but does not seem to have carried much for this last trip. She had a Miss Heron Maxwell with her– Justice Harington left yesterday to go to shoot on the river– Mrs Harington gave a large dinner party tonight. The Misses Maclean, Col. Armstrong, Mr Arkwright, Col. Forbes &c &c all young people. The Denison Ross. We had music in evening the Macleans sang very beautifully. Mrs D. Ross could not play as having been vaccinated her arm hurt her. There is a scare of small pox here now & everybody is being vaccinated.
