30 January 1906 — Calcutta
Tuesday. 30th [January 1906]. We got up at 5 to make a start for Burmah. The Judge appeared at 6 at our breakfast to see us off. It was just daylight as we went off to the place to embark on the small B.T. steamer. Before stepping on board our pulses were felt by a lady Dr as a precaution against carrying the plague on board. The steamer was very empty & we each got a cabin to ourselves. We dawdled along, started long after daylight & remained a couple of hours in the river towards afternoon without moving—all of wh made us regret the necessity of such an early start.
