31 January 1906 — En route to Burma
Wednesday. 31st [January 1906]. I woke with a rattling headache & had to lie in bed all day. As it was very hot & my berth was narrow I thought I should be more comfortable on the sofa under the port & had my bed arranged there. In the middle of the night I was awakened by a bang on my head & then heard something flopping by my side. I had a hazy idea that a bird had flown in to the cabin & put out my hand to catch it—but found I could not hold it. On getting a light to! & behold it was a fish!! of about 1½ lb. & was battering itself to pieces against the wooden wall. I got a towel & managed to catch it & soon restored it to its natural element. But from the blood & fish scales he left behind I am afraid he wd hardly have escaped with its life. I settled myself in my original bed & slept the rest of the night quietly.
