1 February 1906 — En route to Burma
Thursday. 1st February [1906]. Better & up to luncheon. Had a talk to a pleasant old French Genl De Beully who had commanded the French forces during the last war in Cochin China. He told me he is travelling to Burmah to get pictures of Burmese Pagodas to illustrate a book he is writing. He said that when he had got half way thro’ his book he found that he had not got the necessary illustrations for proper comparison so he decided at once to come over here to fetch them. He had come direct to Ceylon—thence by sea to Calcutta—there had stept on to this ship & was hoping to meet the French Consul at Rangoon as he did not know a word of English. He was learned in architecture & was interested when I told him my name. There was a Col. & Mrs Burton also on board she very talkative & irrepressible.
