9 February 1906 — Gokteik
Friday. 9th [February 1906]. Got up early & Nela & I went a little way down the path to the Ravine in search of seeds of a dear little red creeper we had seen. We saw a large plant of asparagus fern too long for us to dig up. Got some very big beans of a creeper, enclosed in a very prickly pod. The ravine was full of mist wh only cleared as the sun warmed up the day. Saw 2 animals unknown to me which I now hear are called “ghi” fawn coloured about the size of a big dog. Saw also monkeys swinging from tree to tree. The jungle a mass of bamboos, pampas grass, reeds of several kinds, crotons, tamarinds & other tropical trees. Went back to bungalow & breakfast at 9.30 & then on to the station & left by 10.30 train for Maymyo where we had tiffin & got back to Mandalay at 7.30.
