11 February 1906 — Mandalay
Sunday. 11th February [1906]. Nela went off to Arrakan Pagoda in the morning at 7.30 with Baker. I rested & got up later & did not move out till 4 o’cl. Wrote, read & talked to the Brownes who are very pleasant people. We all sat at one table at meals with the Burtons & had a funny experience at lunch having little to eat. Mostly tinned food. The rice pudding which we all depended upon did not appear & the servants said “there was no more”! General indignation– Baker made black coffee for us in my tea baskets & we provided the Brownes with same. At 4 Nela & I drove off to the Queen’s Monastery. The gherry waller was an intelligent man & leaving his poney & vehicle offered to be guide round the monastery. He showed Nela the best places to make photos from– He asked the head monk to admit us into the interior. It certainly is a beautiful place all carved without & gilt within & ornamented with the looking glass mosaic work which is so decorative. We returned to the hotel & got a cup of tea & then started off for church wh we were told began at 6.30. We found it had been at 6 so that we were very late– We met Mr & Lady Anne Murray coming away. They have come up the Irrawaddy wh took them a week & are still staying on board– We walked back to the hotel & as it was very dark we missed our way & only got in at 8 just in time for dinner which was luckily better cooked & served. Nela read aloud in the evening from Miss Bacon’s book on Japanese women.
