19 February 1906 — En route to Ceylon
Monday. 19th [February 1906]. Nela having slept last night on deck on account of the great heat, in company with Miss Crofton I had our cabin to myself. Baker, while dressing me, appeared so feeble that I questioned her closely & found that she was feeling ill & had not been able to eat for a week past. I spoke to Sir Allen Perry & he kindly offered to see her so I fetched her onto the upper deck before breakfast. He at once declared that he believes her to have the beginnings of typhoid & recommended she should go straight on to hospital at Colombo. This we settled to do. We reached that place abt 4 & the Govr Sir Henry Blake came at once & carried off Princess Louise, Mr Yorke & Miss Crofton. Sir Allen Perry helped Nela & me & saw us on shore & installed at the Galle Face Hotel. Baker was carried off by the Medical Officer to the Hospital. We have got very pleasant rooms with the plash of the waves in our ears. It was a very hot night & steamy heat wh is rather trying. The hotel is large & well managed & the food excellent. A large dining hall & Cingalee waiters in white jackets & loin clothes & each a round comb stuck in his hair like a crescent. We sat in the garden to have our coffee. Coming up from the jetty to the Galle Face Hotel we had our first experience of Ceylon rickshaws & found it a very pleasant mode of moving about. The rickshaw as light & easily pulled by the coolie who trots along at a good pace except when going up hill.
