20 February 1906 — Colombo
Tuesday. 20th [February 1906]. Sir Allan Perry drove me in his dog cart after breakfast to the hospital where I visited Baker. Found her better but having some fever– She is very comfortably installed in a room to herself—a Cingalee attendant & an English Ward Sister. The nature of her illness is not yet declared. I decided to give up the Japanese tour & go back to Venice, on her account & my own as I am getting very tired. I offered Nela to send her on to Brisbane to visit the Chelmsford & to telegraph to Francie to propose this. Returned to the hotel to pick up Nela & we went off to Cook’s to enquire about my passage. Find that the P&O “Mongolia” starts on 8th March & one to Brisbane will go on 19th by which she could go. We took a drive in the afternoon to call on Sir Chas: & Lady Layard, but found that the gates of the garden were covered with advertisements of sale & the servant told us they were away at Kandy & are about to leave Ceylon in April. We drove round the Cantonments & saw the Museum outside of which is the statue of Sir Wm Gregory in court dress a rather trying caricature and altogether ridiculous. Sat out in the evening to keep cool—as it was very hot.
