21 February 1906 — Colombo
Wednesday. 21st [February 1906]. We went out at 10 to Cook’s & definitely decided to take my passage home on 8th also sent off the cable to Francie about Nela– Then to Queen’s House to pick up Mr Yorke & he took us to the jewellers to buy uncut Ceylon stones which took up a good deal of time. In the afternoon we drove out to Mt Lavinia & had tea– Interesting drive through the suburbs & where one could see the life of the natives—& into their low huts overshadowed by the groves of cocoanut trees. We took a little more than an hour– Mount Lavinia has a nice old world look perched on a rock overhanging a little bay where there was a row of native fishing boats. We sat out in the garden & watched some of these boats driving straight in to shore with their large sails full set. There were also natives in the rocks fishing—those who were furthest out to sea seemed to be catching nice fish looking like mackerel. We got back to the Galle Face Hotel just before dinner & dined with Sir A. Perry.
