7 March 1906 — Colombo | |
Wednesday. 7th March [1906]. Saw Sir Allan after breakfast & settled to go shopping with him in the afternoon. Went off to Thos. Cook’s to see about my tickets & Nela’s & arrange accts & then returned to the hotel & sat writing. At 4 Sir Allan & I had tea in the hall & then drove to D. Theodore’s & bargained for Ceylon stones for a long time without coming to any conclusion. Took them away on approval. I then returned to the Hotel & left Sir Allan in town—a great thunderstorm is raging round over the sea as I write—& it is very oppressive– Dined with Sir Allan Perry in the Restaurant of the Hotel & also an Australian Miss Franks who has a fine voice & is returning to England to get engagements. In the evening a tiresome band played in the garden but in the interval we got Miss Franks to sing to us in the Ladies Drawing room. She has a powerful organ & is well taught but her voice is a little hard & metallic. She seems a nice quiet young woman. The piano on wh she accompanied herself was old & bad & untuned so it was difficult for her to sing. | |
