1 April 1906 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 1st April [1906]. I went to morning service & was rather aghast at the high church ways of our new chaplain. He bows to the communion table as he passes it, & has brought candles in– There is no actual harm [in] it but it is a sad departure from the simple dignity of our Protestant religion– I give up the attempt to stop it—& only keep my own ideas to myself, & away from the whole thing as much as I reasonably can– Yesterday I went to the service at St Marks that Baroness Reinelt had done for the soul of her husband. I can understand this better than our pretenses. They believe in the efficacy of prayer for the dead—we do not—& I told Angela that I prayed for her & not for her husband. I got into a corner where I could sit quietly unobserved. I was shocked at the indistinct mumbling of the Latin service which the old priest gallopped through. The service was at the Altar of La Madonna—& we were placed within the chancel rails–
