3 July 1906 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 3rd July [1906]. Mme Malagola came in the morning to tell me that her niece Teresa is not well eno’ to come & to work here so we concocted a plan whereby she is to go to the Cos: Hospital for a rest cure & I am to take here there tomorrow morning. At 4 I had a visit from the dear old Merrick couple—the Americans who have been here so long at the Hotel Europe. They left at ¼ to 5 & at the same time I went off to the yacht “Thistle” to pay my respects to the Empress Eugenie—as she had had me told that I could go any day at 5 to tea on board. She was looking far better than when I last saw her & one could see remains of the old beauty. She received me kindly, introduced an English girl who is with her as a sort of companion & a niece a Princess something whose name I did not catch. Monsieur Petri was in attendance & Signor Malvezzi dei Medici a rather 2nd rate looking youth but said to be clever. Count Nigra came & it was of historical interest to see him with the Empress considering that it was he who had contrived her escape from Paris after Sedan. Count Sormani Moretti had come on board with him. We had tea & there was general talk—the Empress & Nigra often falling into à parts. The Empress has been in Egypt & visited the Dalmatian coast on her way thence here. Before 6 the Empress rose & we left. I went to Hotel Victoria to see Angela Reinelt & bid her adieu as she leaves for Sistiana tomorrow. I found the Morosini party with her—when they left Angela went out for a time in garden with me & then I hurried home to receive M. & Mme Malagola at dinner at 7.30. A few people came—but not many. Miss Thesiger with her pretty little niece Miss Webster whose story is a sad one. Her mother ran away from Webster her first husband—& after many years with the man who carried her off & afterwards married her, she has just run away from him—& the girl is left motherless. The girl is pretty, fair & a flirt. What will be her fate in life?
