14 July 1906 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 14th [July 1906]. The Eve of the Redentore—the great yearly fete on the Giudecca canal. It rained all day till about 4. As it then cleared I started to go for a walk. Just outside the door I met pretty Countess Czernin & accompanied her to the P. Office on foot then to the Zattere & left her at the Accademia where she took the steamer to return to H. Danieli. She leaves Venice tomorrow so we took leave of each other. I took my gondola home from the Accademia where it met me. At 8.30 I started in gondola for the Calcina where I had made rendezvous with Canon & Mrs & Miss Ragg—& also Matron Chaffey, Teresina & Dr Tommasini’s little girl. It soon came on to rain so there were no fireworks & we cd only float about. At 10.30 we tied up to a haven & had our supper unpacked with wh the company was regaled for a short time while there had been a shower to took refuge under the pavillion of the Calcina. Then we met Signor Arbib. Got home to bed at 12.30. The rain was a pity as the Redentore is a popular fête—hundreds of gondolas & boats come out full of people who sup on the water & many go on to the Lido to see the sun rise. There was singing & laughing talking all around—many boats were adorned with green branches & lighted with many lanterns. It is amusing to see people setting off on their expedition sitting round a supper table all ready prepared for a meal. General good humour prevailed & there was perfect order. All night people tramped across the bridge of boats between the Zattere & the Redentore.
