11 November 1906 — Stupinigi Palace, Turin
Sunday. 11th [November 1906]. Mass was at 11 o’cl in the small oratorio wh is hid by folding doors in a room thro’ wh we have to pass on leaving the great round hall to go to the Queen’s apartment. In the meeting room we all assembled with black veils on our heads & I had a place in the front bench. The Queen’s Prie Dieu was in the middle just in front of the altar. The service seemed to me more cold & unintelligible than ever. The priest literally whispered the whole service. Coming away the Q. asked me whether I had noticed the fine Argenton lace on the altar & on the priests robe. She said it was family lace wh had belonged to a former Queen & had been given to the Church. It is only used on great occasions such as today it being the present King’s birthday. Directly after mass we went to lunch & afterwards sat chatting in the long gallery while the Queen smoked & then worked something for charity. At 2 we retired to our rooms wh I was glad to do as my head ached & I rested till 5 o’cl tea after wh the Q. & household went to the parish church to Benediction & the Te Deum for the King. We dined at 8 & sat chatting in the evening for some time till the Q. rose & went to the piano with Prof: Pollini the pianist & made him play to us. He is from Padua & an excellent performer. We went to bed at 11.
