21 November 1906 — Paris
Wednesday. 21st [November 1906]. Baker & I walked to Mlle Michaud’s & had a weary morning of “trying on.” A thing wh would be unbearable had I to do it more than once a year. After lunch Sophy fetched me in her carriage & took me to call on Mme de Staal ex Russian Ambassadress in London. He was ill. She was grown very old & was very depressed over the state of things in Russia. M. Stolypine is her nephew & she was full of the terrible attempt on his life & the effect on his family. She says he himself is full of spirit—goes straight ahead doing what he thinks right. Will not have the protection of the police & says if he must die he will do so bravely. We drove to La Muette & had tea & sat a long time talking. Then Sophy retired to her rooms to rest & I sat reading till dinner at 8. M. & Mme de Gournet (the Count’s daughter) dined there– A rather handsome woman but artificial in manner & get up. They sent me back to this hotel in their carriage at 10–
