12 December 1906 — 3 Savile Row
Wednesday. 12th [December 1906]. Mrs Whitaker called for me in her motor brougham at 2.30 & took me to Mile End to inspect the Restaurant. We found all in very good order & one poor man having his tea spoke gratefully of the good & cheap fare provided for them. There was to have been a meeting at the Dante Society wh was to have been addressed by Austin the Poet Laureate. It was put off on acct of his not being well so I telegraphed to Countess Martinengo to come & dine with me wh she did & we had a pleasant chat. I am glad to have made neater acquaintance with her as she is clean & learned & pleasant.
