26 December 1906 — Bessborough, Fiddown, County Kilkenny
Wednesday. 26th December [1906]. The weather changed & it became bitterly cold & it snowed so hard that the whole country was enveloped in a white garb. Hunting & shooting were stopped. Sir Hugh & Lady McCalmont & their son the millionaire Dermott came over after hunting to stay 3 days– He was one of our military attachés when we were at Constantinople during the Turco Russian war and was then a smart dapper young officer, now he is an elderly rather stout General. He married Miss Bingham Lord Clanmorris’ daughter a wild Irish girl only caring for riding & smoking & full of jollity & good humour. They were driven in from hunting early by the bad weather & had to wait some time for their servants & luggage. Lady M. is a short round about little body with a complexion ruined by hard weather, mannish costume & a hearty loud laugh. They live at a place not far from here called Mount Juliet. Their son has not very long inherited a very large fortune from his uncle.
