3 January 1907 — Bessborough, Fiddown, County Kilkenny
Thursday. 3rd [January 1907]. The Congreves telegraphed last evening to ask Edward & Arthur to go to Mt Congreve today to shoot there & to accompany them to visit Irène. So we started this morning soon after 10 in the motor car to go there. Blanche & Gweneth were to go out hunting. As we went along towards Fiddown we met Lord Waterford’s hounds going to the meet. It was a lovely morning but cold. It had rained hard in the night & frost set in towards morng. We reached Mt Congreve at a little before 11 & Jack took the gentlemen out at once. I sat chatting with Irène & we looked through the books that had been collected by his grandmother very well chosen old fashioned novels & very well bound. Then we took a turn round the grounds wh are very pretty & has very fine trees. We started back soon after lunch to which the gentlemen returned having only shot 8 wood cock. On arriving at Bessborough we met the hounds coming through the Park & we found Lord & Lady Waterford & 2 or 3 others had come in to have tea. They had not had a good day. We had high tea in the dining room. Lady W. is a charmg looking young woman very bright & talkative. He is good looking—& very like his father but not half as genial. We can see a kind of gloom hangs over him wh is no wonder seeing his father & mother both died such sad deaths. When they were gone Blanche went up to her bedroom to change her dress & & to rest & I sat with her till dinner time. In the evening Blanche, Arthur DC. & Gweneth & Bertie played race patience. Edward played patience. I sat by him & advised & helped. I got a telegram from Q. Margherita saying “Many thanks for dear good wishes. A happy New Year for you. May it be full of good & happy things for you. Margherita.”
